Description

1948 Norton 16H 500 – HLJ 525

A very attractive and characterful 1948 Norton 16H 500, registration HLJ 525, presented in classic black and polished metal finish.

The Norton 16H was one of the marque's most important long-running models and became particularly well known through its extensive military use during the Second World War.

The WD16H was widely used by British and Commonwealth forces for dispatch riding, convoy work, communications and general military transport.

This 1948 example is a post-war machine, although its specification and model lineage are closely connected to Norton's wartime motorcycles. While a direct military history for HLJ 525 has not been independently confirmed, the model itself has very strong military heritage.

Powered by a 490cc air-cooled side-valve single-cylinder engine, the 16H is known for its simplicity, durability and strong low-speed pulling power. It uses a period four-speed gearbox and chain final drive.

This example presents very well and retains many appealing period features including girder front forks, rigid rear frame, sprung saddle, wire-spoke wheels, rear luggage rack, Smiths speedometer and period-style number plates.

The polished Norton fuel tank with traditional Norton script contrasts nicely with the black frame and mudguards. There is some light age-related patina and surface corrosion visible around the engine and fittings, but overall the bike appears very complete and has a highly authentic period look.

The Norton 16H remains a desirable and collectable British classic, especially with its strong wartime association and unmistakable pre-war styling.

Collection Sale / Condition Notice:
This motorcycle is being sold as part of a private collection that has been in long-term storage. The bikes are believed to be running, but due to the period of storage we strongly recommend a full service and mechanical recommissioning before regular road use. A new battery will be installed where required. The motorcycle is sold strictly as seen and as is, and buyers are encouraged to inspect and satisfy themselves as to its condition before purchase.
