Description

1978 MGB GT – Uprated Engine – Beautiful Red Interior – Substantial History

A very usable and characterful 1978 MGB GT, finished in classic black with a particularly striking red interior. This is not being presented as a concours or pristine example, but rather as a well-sorted, extensively improved classic that is ready to be enjoyed as a weekend car, regular-use classic or fast-road GT.

The car presents very well at first glance, with the black bodywork and bright chrome trim giving it a strong traditional MGB appearance. The black paintwork is not perfect and does show age-related marks, imperfections and areas that would benefit from attention. In time, a repaint would certainly take the car to another level, and we have deliberately photographed the paint honestly. That said, it remains a very presentable and smart-looking car overall.

Importantly, the car appears very solid and essentially rust-free, with a clean and tidy underside. Again, we are not claiming it to be a freshly restored show car underneath, but it presents as a sound, usable and well-maintained example.

Uprated Engine & Mechanical Specification

This is where the car becomes particularly interesting. A substantial amount of money has clearly been spent on the mechanical setup, with the engine reportedly producing a notable increase in power over a standard factory MGB 1.8-litre specification.

From our inspection of the engine bay and the photographs, visible upgrades appear to include:

Twin side draught performance carburettor setup – visually consistent with a Weber-style installation
Performance tubular exhaust manifold / extractor header
Uprated aluminium radiator
Electric cooling fan
Upgraded silicone coolant hoses
Modified performance induction and fuel setup
Uprated and extensively developed engine installation
Clean and well-presented engine bay
Manual gearbox

We are deliberately not making unsupported claims regarding the exact internal engine specification, camshaft, compression ratio or final horsepower figure without supporting invoices or rolling-road documentation. However, this is very clearly not a standard factory engine setup, and the visible performance modifications support the car's reported significant increase over standard output.

Recent Major Mechanical Service

The MGB has very recently undergone a substantial service and mechanical check, including:

Full engine oil service
Brake fluid flush
Full nut-and-bolt inspection
General mechanical inspection and checks

The car also comes with a substantial history file, adding useful background to what is clearly a much-loved and extensively developed example.

Stunning Red Interior

For us, the interior is one of the strongest features of this car. The rich red cabin contrasts beautifully with the black exterior and presents extremely well.

It features a particularly attractive specification including red seats with black piping, matching red carpets, red door cards, red rear load area, wood-effect dashboard trim and a wood-rim steering wheel.

The dashboard has also been upgraded with a set of white-faced auxiliary and main gauges, giving the cabin a more purposeful fast-road appearance while retaining a suitably classic feel. Please study the photographs closely, as the interior really does present very nicely.

The practical GT rear load area is also trimmed in red and remains one of the reasons these cars are such enjoyable and usable classics.

Overall

This is a refreshingly honest MGB GT. It is not perfect, and we would rather say that clearly. The black paint has imperfections and, for someone wanting a high-level show finish, a future repaint would be worthwhile.

However, beneath that sits a very appealing package: a solid and essentially rust-free car, clean and tidy underside, excellent red interior, substantially uprated engine, recent major servicing and a large history file.

For someone looking for an MGB GT to actually drive and enjoy, rather than polish endlessly in the garage, this could be a cracking choice. It has presence, character, useful performance upgrades and a cabin that looks superb.

A great weekend classic, fast-road GT or regular-use historic car with plenty of money already spent in the right areas.

Viewing is strongly recommended. Please study all photographs carefully, including the close-up paintwork images, interior, engine bay and underside photographs, as we have made every effort to present the car openly and accurately.
