History of the Ford Taunus

The Ford Taunus was Ford of Europe's answer to family saloons such as the Opel Ascona, Vauxhall Cavalier and Volkswagen Passat. Built primarily in Germany and Spain, the Taunus became one of Ford Europe's most successful models throughout the 1970s.

The later TC2-series Taunus, introduced in 1976, featured a more modern angular design and improved comfort levels. The range culminated in luxurious Ghia versions such as this example, offering upgraded trim, improved interiors and a more premium driving experience.

Many Taunus models shared engineering and styling influences with the UK Ford Cortina, although European-market cars often featured engines and specifications never officially offered in Britain.

Today, surviving Taunus models are becoming increasingly scarce, particularly left-hand-drive Ghia examples, making them an interesting alternative to the more common Cortina.

Summary

This is an honest and increasingly rare classic Ford project that offers an excellent foundation for restoration. It is complete, running, and retains much of its original character. With paintwork, body repairs and mechanical sorting, this Spanish-market Taunus has the potential to become a distinctive and unusual classic Ford that stands apart from the crowd.
